ABIA set for expansion, city council set to vote Thursday

Austin Bergstrom set for more expansion as the airport continues to see record numbers of increases.  Total passenger traffic for October 2015 was 1,044,747 up 7% compared to October 2014.   City Council is set to vote this Thursday on a 289 million dollar expansion that would add 9 gates and 70,000 square feet to the east terminal.  Rumors have been circulating for months now that ABIA could see a direct to China, this should only add to those rumors.  ABIA already has directs to the UK, Canada, Mexico, and soon Germany which will start in the spring.

Austin City Council Thursday to consider a $289 million construction contract with Hensel Phelps to add 70,000 square feet and 9 gates to the ABIA terminal, along with 1 million square feet of added "apron" pavement in the vicinity of the terminal. Also doubling an engineering/design contract for the project from $18 million to $36 million. The point is increase airport capacity from 11 million passengers a year to 15 million, enough we're told to serve the need until 2025. But the cost of all this, estimated at $218 million a year ago, is now $350 million, officials say. Exploring why.
